My hero, U.U. Rev. James Reeb, was murdered by the KKK coming out of a restaurant the evening after the third attempt to cross the Edmund Pettys Bridge and walk to Montgomery, Alabama, finally reached the statehouse at last. MLK, Jr., and the SCLC had put out a call after the 2nd attempt turned into Bloody Sunday, and friends and allies, religious & activist, came from around the country, including Walter Reuther & Millie Jeffrey from the UAW, for the third weekend made a way out of no way. This was two years after Rev. James organized the contingent from All Souls UU in DC to the August 1963 March on Washington for Jobs & Justice, and led the All Souls UUs down their front steps and down 16th St. to the Mall. James Reeb, live like him.
